Jack Reacher is back in action in Reacher season 5's first-look.
Not long after its successful premiere, Prime Video continues to bet on the franchise based on Lee Child's novels and starring Alan Ritchson as the titular character. The drifter has been in three different arcs thus far — all of them becoming massive hits for the streamer. Given this, it isn't surprising that Ritchson is set to return on the small screen as the unconventional hero in Reacher season 4 this month, which will see the show adapt "Gone Tomorrow."
Beyond his upcoming adventure, Prime Video is also finally starting to take advantage of the project's popularity by expanding it. Immediately after Reacher season 4 ends its eight-episode run, the universe's very first spinoff, Neagley, will roll out. Starring Maria Sten as Frances Neagley, the series endeavors to give fans more of the world that Ritchson's character exists in without overdoing the flagship. Looking at Reacher's long-term future, however, production for season 5 has also been ongoing for quite a while now.
Ahead of season 4, Ritchson shared the first look at Jack in Reacher season 5 via a video from the set of the project on his official Instagram account. In the clip, he is goofing around, asking about people's thoughts about mayonnaise. That said, upon closer look, Ritchson's face is noticeably bruised, and it's safe to say that it's for Reacher season 5. Check out the video below:
No release date has been announced for Reacher season 5 thus far, which makes sense, considering that Prime Video's focus is currently on launching season 4 and Neagley. That said, it has already been confirmed that it will adapt Lee Child's Make Me. In the novel, the titular character's curiosity about the origins of Mother's Rest will send him into one of his most bizarre adventures. Upon arrival, he is greeted with intentional indifference and even coldness. It will be an interesting change of pace for the hero coming from Reacher season 4 being set in a city.
Obviously, Reacher season 5 being greenlit guarantees that the hero survives whatever ordeal is coming his way in season 4. However, it will be great to see some character arc throughout the show's run. Reacher has an anthology-esque format, so every cycle tackles a different narrative, with barely any ties to each other besides both involving the titular character. Prime Video is shifting its approach for Neagley, as it is more serialized.
Ultimately, however, what's clear is that Reacher is well-loved, and unless something drastic happens, it's safe to assume that the show will continue for years to come. Ritchson is perfect as the character, becoming the definitive version of the hero — despite Tom Cruise's movies. While it will be some time before season 5 premieres, expect that he will continue to share content from the set of the project, considering how engaged he is with fans.

Proof of Prime Video's confidence in the series is the fact that it has already renewed for Reacher season 5 before it could even come back with new episodes this year. Admittedly, that's unsurprising, considering the show's popularity. Looking after that, however, the fate of the project is still uncertain. That said, Ritchson's new three-year first-look television deal with the studio via his production company, Dancing Skeleton (via Deadline), effectively solidifies Reacher's return throughout the terms of that new agreement.
This means that if the show maintains its yearly release, it can run for two to three more seasons after Reacher season 5. Obviously, that doesn't factor in the possibility that Prime Video and Ritchson will extend their current deal, or that the streamer will renew the show even after the first-look agreement is done. However, considering that there are about 30 books in Child's novels, Reacher can definitely stay on the air for more years to come.
Why Reacher Has Resonated With The Public
Reacher is arguably the biggest breakout hit of the last few years. Granted that it had built-in fans, thanks to Child's novels and Cruise's films, it would be hard-pressed to find anyone who could have predicted just how big it was going to be. Streaming and traditional broadcasters have their respective action-adventure book adaptation shows, but very few come close to the success of the Prime Video series. The project has been so popular, the streamer has started to expand the franchise via its very first offshoot, Neagley.
What sets Reacher apart from its peers is how it has been able to perfectly balance being faithful to its source material while also offering viewers something new. This way, fans of the books can still enjoy them without being able to predict every single twist that's coming their way. Beyond that, the fact that Reacher has also made sure to have a yearly release despite being on streaming somehow helps in keeping it relevant amid an influx of other shows in the genre.
