Taylor Sheridan's fans look forward to a potential Yellowstone crossover between Marshals and Dutton Ranch, which would complete one of the neo-Western saga's best reversals. Headlined by Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton, Marshals is a hit on CBS. On May 15, Dutton Ranch sees the return of Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler.
When Yellowstone began, Rip loathed Kayce, and the feeling was mutual. The youngest son of John Dutton III (Kevin Costner) was a prodigal who rejected life on the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. Meanwhile, Rip rose to become the Yellowstone's stern and intimidating wagon boss, and he was none too pleased when Kayce returned to the Dutton Ranch in Yellowstone season 1.
Rip and Kayce's rivalry continued in Yellowstone season 2, after John named Kayce to run the Dutton Ranch, relegating Rip to the bunkhouse. There was a lot of bad blood between Kayce and Rip during Yellowstone's early seasons, which makes the 180 that happened by the end of Yellowstone even more remarkable.
Rip Wheeler Is Now The Closest Kayce Dutton Has To A Brother

With Lee Dutton (Dave Annable) and Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) now dead, Rip Wheeler is the closest thing that Kayce has to a brother. The brother of Kayce's late wife, Monica Long (Kelsey Asbille), is also dead, and he loathed Kayce. Rip Wheeler, meanwhile, is now Kayce's brother-in-law after he married Beth Dutton in Yellowstone season 4's finale.
At the end of Yellowstone season 5, Kayce and Rip were on good terms. They were friendly and respectful, if not exactly close. Regardless of their past animosity, Kayce, Rip, and Beth were the key decision-makers about what to do about selling the Yellowstone Ranch and how to recover from John Dutton's murder.
Rip and Kayce acting like brothers is a remarkable turnaround after rewatching Yellowstone's earliest seasons. Rip and Kayce had violent fist-fights in Yellowstone seasons 1 and 2. One of them was authorized by John Dutton so that Rip and Kayce could put their hatred behind them.
Dutton Ranch is expected to be a hit on Paramount+, just as Marshals scores big ratings on CBS. Both spinoffs continue Taylor Sheridan's powerhouse Yellowstone franchise, and a crossover has not been ruled out.
Despite being on network TV and streaming, respectively, Marshals and Dutton Ranch are under Paramount Skydance's corporate umbrella, so Kayce, Beth, and Rip could, and are expected to, reunite eventually.
Rip Is Now The Dutton He Always Wanted To Be

Naturally, Rip resented Kayce when Yellowstone began. Rip idolized John Dutton and dedicated his life to serving the Yellowstone Ranch and protecting the Dutton family. Kayce's rejection of his family and the Yellowstone, only to come back and be placed in charge because he was John's son, ate at Rip. Wheeler desperately wanted John to see him as a son, which happened, at last, when Rip married Beth.
Now that Rip and Beth have their own ranch in South Texas, it's telling that they named it "Dutton Ranch" despite Rip's last name being Wheeler. In Rip's mind and heart, he is a Dutton. Rip hated his father and didn't have any loyalty to his surname. Further, Rip feels that he's the only one who 'earned' being a Dutton by lifelong service and by falling in love with Beth.
Putting up with his "crazy" wife should really earn Rip a prize of some sort, but being part of the Dutton family is enough for Rip. After all, Rip isn't exactly the non-violent type himself. Interestingly, both Rip and Kayce have something else in common: raising teenage sons. Kayce has Tate Dutton (Brecken Merrill), and Beth and Rip are co-parenting Carter (Finn Little).
Rip and Kayce on the same side as brothers-in-law in a future Marshals and Dutton Ranch crossover will be fascinating. It won't be smooth sailing, as Kayce's do-goodery can still conflict with Rip's roughhouse pragmatism and Beth's high-level scheming.
Still, you'd never guess from watching early Yellowstone that Rip would become Kayce's last brother standing.
CBS Sets Fall Dates for ‘Marshals,’ ‘Survivor’ and More
CBS has set its fall premiere dates, and as has been the case for the past few seasons, most of the network’s lineup will launch in early October.
Reality staples Survivor and The Amazing Race will debut a bit earlier, as will 60 Minutes. But all of CBS’ scripted series are set to premiere over six days starting Oct. 4. FBI and CIA follow on Oct. 5, with each show moving up an hour (to 8 and 9 p.m. ET/PT) from their spots last season as CBS eliminated its Monday comedy block for 2026-27. True crime show Harlan Coben’s Final Twist follows at 10 p.m.
An all-NCIS lineup remains on Tuesday nights starting Oct. 6, with newcomer NCIS: New York sandwiched between the flagship series and prequel NCIS: Origins. CBS’ two other new fall series, comedy Eternally Yours and drama Cupertino, premiere Oct. 8 along with Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage and Elsbeth. Ghosts and Matlock are set for midseason premieres, but a pair of Ghosts specials will air on Oct. 29 and Dec. 10 tied to Halloween and Christmas. The Friday lineup of Sheriff Country, Fire Country and Boston Blue debuts Oct. 9.
