He’d been struggling in the wake of discovering that colleague and mate Stevie Nash (Elinor Lawless) had been sleeping with his son Dr Matty Linlaker (Aron Julius).
Matty told Dylan in confidence that he’d fallen for Stevie – who he’d covered for when she accidentally administered a morphine overdose to a patient – and said that he would deal with the situation himself.
There were huge fears for Dylan, who vanished – and a big shock followed
Dylan, however, took matters into his own hands, reporting Stevie’s mistake and her affair to Clinical Lead Flynn Byron (Olly Rix), which almost cost Stevie her career.
When Flynn confirmed Stevie would be on reduced duties but would retain her job, Dylan couldn’t understand why – and his reaction created a bigger wedge between he and son Matty, who later witnessed his relapse.
Stevie, meanwhile, was horrified to learn that Dylan had been drinking and was unable to locate him. Dylan was subsequently seen driving with a bottle by his side.
In tonight’s episode, he headed to a care home to visit his dad Brian, who didn’t recognise him due to the year’s of drinking.
Brian said some horrible things about Dylan, who rushed out of the building and got back in his car, before proceeding to drink from the clear bottle beside him.
He left Matty a voicemail, reiterating that he’s not like his own dad and that he does care about him.
Back at the ED, Matty and Stevie were concerned over the fact that they’d been unable to locate Dylan and, in shock scenes, they listened to the voicemail – which concluded with a thunderous noise, indicative of a crash.
Horrified, Stevie urged Matty to call his dad back but as they moved through the hospital, they saw their colleagues standing around reception desk as Clinical Nurse Manager Siobhan (Melanie Hill) received a call, notifying them of a collision – in which Dylan was thought to have sustained serious injuries.
Matty was told by Flynn to sit this one out given that Dylan is his dad but he refused and thus joined his colleagues outside as the ambulances transporting the injured patients = arrived.
To their surprise, however, the injured man wasn’t Dylan but simply had his coat. Dylan was in another ambulance and, aside from a cut to his face, was largely okay.
Fans had been worried sick about Dylan’s fate since confirmation that a crash would occur so this will no doubt be good news for the viewers.
Flynn, however, had been tipped off by Stevie about Dylan’s relapse and thus urged him to take a breathalyser test before assisting with the incoming trauma patients. Dylan did as he was told and the test confirmed that he had not been drinking.
Matty, meanwhile, struggled when the patient initially thought to be Dylan went into cardiac arrest, with Dylan and all those around him urging him to stop compressions.
Matty wanted to continue and Dylan relented but, despite the patient being revived, it was clear that he wasn’t going to survive, which led to Dylan having to inform his family that the machine was basically keeping the man alive.
Matty realised that he should’ve listened to Dylan, who promised that he would do whatever it takes to overcome his addiction and be there for him. In emotional scenes, the father and son duo shared a hug.
