August 2026 is already a big month for Alan Ritchson thanks to the arrival of Reacher season four, but he has another big release arriving soon too. Alan Ritchson's Reacher casting instantly pushed the lingering controversy over the previous Tom Cruise movies to one side, and he has become everybody's default image of the character.
It's not like Ritchson wasn't an in-demand actor before Prime's adaptation of the Jack Reacher book series, but his star has asended massively since the first season. Near the start of 2026, Ritchson's War Machine became one of Netflix's biggest streaming hits, and a sequel is already in development.
This year sees the arrival of both Reacher's fourth season and the show's first spinoff, Neagley, with Ritchson expected to appear in at least a couple of episodes. It's all go for the star in 2026, but one project that's being overlooked is his gritty, almost dialogue-free actioner Motor City.
The screenplay for this 1970s-set thriller had been doing the rounds for two decades, with actors like Chris Evans and Gerard Butler being attached at different stages. Ritchson was the one who pushed Motor City to the finish line, where he plays a vengeful soldier trying to save his former lover from a gangster.
Alan Ritchson's Motor City Can Be A Bigger Success When It Debuts At Home

Motor City received broadly positive reviews, but despite having a cast that included Ritchson, Shailene Woodley and Ben Foster, it bombed. According to Box Office Mojo, it made less than three million on an estimated budget of $30 million. That's a darn shame; despite its experimental style taking some getting used to - again, there are about four lines of dialogue in the entire film - it's a real gem.
It looks incredible, has a great soundtrack, and the action is crunchy and visceral. While most reviews had to compare Motor City to Reacher, Ritchson is playing a more emotional character in the former, and his near-wordless performance is genuinely impressive. It was something of a passion project for the star too, and he even co-produced the film.
Motor City will hit VOD on August 25, right in the midst of Reacher season four. This should give the movie a real boost and will (hopefully) draw more eyeballs to this 1970s throwback.
2026 Has Been A Great Year For Alan Ritchson

While it's taken some time for Ritchson to find his footing away from Reacher, 2026 is the year he's finally done it. He already ended 2025 with the streaming success of Playdate (even though that action comedy's tepid reviews were well-earned), but with Motor City, War Machine and not one, but two new entries in the Reacher franchise, he's having a great year thus far.
He looks set to continue this run in 2027 and beyond too. He's circling another blockbuster, Maelstrom for Netflix, and will play famed Navy SEAL Mike Thornton in a biopic. It has also been confirmed that Reacher season five will be based on the novel Make Me, the 20th entry in the book saga.
There's Still More To Come From Alan Ritchson This Year

August/September 2026 will be a busy one for Ritchson fans, between Motor City landing on VOD and the arrival of Reacher season four, Neagley, and the action thriller Runner. This arrives in early September and casts Ritchson as a delivery man who races against time to bring a new liver to a sick girl; the only issue is he has to fend off waves of mercenaries who want to steal it.
Runner feels like a combination of Speed and Crank, with Ritchson's hero having to drive, punch and shoot his way out of trouble. The star will then wrap up the year co-starring alongside none other than Arnold Schwarzenegger in the action comedy The Man with the Bag. This casts Arnie as (who else?) Santa Claus, who teams with Ritchson's criminal to find his stolen sack of presents.

Alan Ritchson Effectively Seals Reacher’s Long-Term Fate On Prime Video
A surprise move from Alan Ritchson effectively seals the long-term fate of Reacher on Prime Video. Following its successful debut in 2022, the action-adventure series immediately became a hit for the streamer. This is despite being burdened by the previous big-screen adaptation of Lee Child's novels. Tom Cruise's movie take on Jack Reacher had its fans, and it remain enjoyable upon rewatch now. That said, it's safe to say that Ritchson's portrayal as the former military-turned-wanderer is widely regarded as its definitive version, especially after three seasons of Reacher.
While its sophomore year wasn't able to be as universally beloved as its freshman year, it never really impacted the public's interest in the Prime Video series. Reacher season 3 posted the highest viewership for the show in its history and considering the hype surrounding what's next for the character, the wait for season 4 has been frustrating for some. Based on "Gone Tomorrow," the next installment of the Prime Video project has long finished production, with a release date supposedly sometime this year. Beyond that, however, Ritchson has effectively confirmed Reacher's long-term fate thanks to a new update.
Alan Ritchson's First-Look Deal With Prime Video Solidifies Reacher's Future

Proof of Prime Video's confidence in the series is the fact that it has already renewed for Reacher season 5 before it could even come back with new episodes this year. Admittedly, that's unsurprising, considering the show's popularity. Looking after that, however, the fate of the project is still uncertain. That said, Ritchson's new three-year first-look television deal with the studio via his production company, Dancing Skeleton (via Deadline), effectively solidifies Reacher's return throughout the terms of that new agreement.
This means that if the show maintains its yearly release, it can run for two to three more seasons after Reacher season 5. Obviously, that doesn't factor in the possibility that Prime Video and Ritchson will extend their current deal, or that the streamer will renew the show even after the first-look agreement is done. However, considering that there are about 30 books in Child's novels, Reacher can definitely stay on the air for more years to come.
Why Reacher Has Resonated With The Public

Reacher is arguably the biggest breakout hit of the last few years. Granted that it had built-in fans, thanks to Child's novels and Cruise's films, it would be hard-pressed to find anyone who could have predicted just how big it was going to be. Streaming and traditional broadcasters have their respective action-adventure book adaptation shows, but very few come close to the success of the Prime Video series. The project has been so popular, the streamer has started to expand the franchise via its very first offshoot, Neagley.
What sets Reacher apart from its peers is how it has been able to perfectly balance being faithful to its source material while also offering viewers something new. This way, fans of the books can still enjoy them without being able to predict every single twist that's coming their way. Beyond that, the fact that Reacher has also made sure to have a yearly release despite being on streaming somehow helps in keeping it relevant amid an influx of other shows in the genre.
