Landman season 2 has officially come to a close, and with season 3 on the horizon, Jacob Lofland reflects on the show and its future, including Taylor Sheridan's upcoming departure.
Although Sheridan will soon be leaving Paramount, he will still be around for Landman season 3. However, if the show gets renewed after its third installment, there will be a noticeable shift as the creator is leaving Paramount when his contract ends in 2028 and joins NBCUniversal in 2029.
His decision to leave has driven a wedge between both critics and audiences. While many support his new endeavors and are excited to see what he does next, others were worried about their favorite shows losing the person who created and nurtured them.
In an interview with ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns for the Landman season 2 finale, Lofland, who portrays Cooper in the Paramount+ series, offered his own input regarding Sheridan's departure. The actor said that he was sad to see him go, and it's something that he tries not to think about.
However, he has faith in the creative team behind the hit drama series, such as Christian Wallace (co-creator and executive producer), who will most likely be staying on board after Landman season 3. Lofland said that Sheridan's departure and reasons for leaving were none of his business, so he wasn't going to get involved:
Yeah, I try not to think about it. No, I mean, I trust everyone there. We'll just see what happens. And I don't know, that's not my business, so I try to stay out of it. That's between them.
Sheridan first confirmed that he was leaving Paramount for NBCUniversal in October 2025. The creator struck a five-year deal with the latter for film, television, and streaming. The contract will go into effect on January 1, 2029. His longtime business partner, David Glasser, will also leave for NBCUniversal, bringing 101 Studios with him under a first-look film and TV deal after the company completes its remaining projects with Paramount.
Sheridan has also delivered many successful TV shows for Paramount during his time with the studio. Beginning with Yellowstone, he continued to put out high-performing series that have ranked among Paramount+’s most-watched titles. He also played a significant role in attracting and retaining new subscribers for the streaming platform.
Landman seasons 1 and 2 can be streamed on Paramount+.
How Tommy's New Oil Company Will Change Landman In Season 3
Warning: SPOILERS lie ahead for Landman season 2's finale, "Tragedy and Flies"!Landman season 2's finale appears to be reshaping the series in a major way, with Tommy’s (Billy Bob Thornton) professional downfall opening new doors.
Tommy's attempt to stop Cami Miller (Demi Moore) from proceeding with an offshore drill that carries an incredibly small chance of success costs him his job at M-Tex. However, his getting fired might just be a blessing in disguise, as it allows him the freedom to open his own corporation, CTT Oil, with his son Cooper (Jacob Lofland) and operate on his own terms. Something that is invaluable to someone as prideful and stubborn as him.
In an interview with ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns, Lofland explains how he believes this new father-son venture in the Landman season 2 ending will affect season 3 and his character. The actor said that he hoped becoming the president of CTT Oil would help Cooper continue to grow as a person and develop a better relationship with his father.
What I would really love for Cooper is just to continue the path of really becoming a man and learning and having the help to get this company up and going with his dad right next to him, really now at this point, showing him how the business works and helping him through these things that we've made mistakes on in the last two seasons, I think that's going to be really interesting. I am looking forward to that. So I'm hoping it's that direction that we head in. We'll see.
Lofland also expressed his excitement for CTT Oil and the role it will play in Landman season 3. He mentioned that he loved filming out on the rigs. While the third season is still shrouded in mystery, the actor is optimistic about where the story is heading, and he can't wait to learn more about what's to come for these characters.
Oh man, so excited. And I love that part of our show. I mean, I love being out there on the rigs and really getting into the oil because I mean, that's where this thing started. For Cooper especially, or that storyline, that's really what it's about and him building it. So I was really excited when I read that and to know that hopefully that is where we're heading in season three is a lot more of that. So I'm interested to learn and interested to get it going. And like I said, hopefully we have a successful company on our hands.
Lofland also briefly offered his input regarding the risks of Cooper running his own company with his father. The series began with a deadly rig accident that Cooper barely survived, an event that also sparked his relationship with his fiancée, Ariana (Paulina Chávez). That moment set the tone for the show, establishing that the oil industry is one that is filled with danger and risks. Given that history, it’s natural to be terrified of getting involved in their new venture.
However, Lofland explained that for Cooper, it was worth the risk. He stated that if his character really wanted something, he would be willing to face all the dangers that come with it. He added that living in fear doesn't get anyone anywhere, so no one should ever let it hold them back from following their dreams.
I mean, there's always that danger of it, but you can't be scared if you want to do this. It's just the price that you pay and you hold that danger or that weight and just go on and continue doing it. If it's time, it's time and just hope it's nothing you cause that does it.
